NnE Shawnee

Congratulations to our student Shawnee for graduating with a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health endorsed in Health Promotion (DPH). When asked what she liked best about the course Shawnee expressed "I really enjoyed the different aspects of the programme such as learning about health promotion and research. It was great to discuss how our skills could be applied practically in employment. It opened up many opportunities for me and I am now continuing on with further research. I also enjoy the department, the many opportunities available and the great staff".

Shawnee is now undertaking her Masters of Public Health (MPH), exploring young wāhine (women) Māori experiences and relationships with alcohol, in which she is supervised by Dr Emma Wyeth from the NTMHRU and Dr Richard Egan from SBRU. She is also working part time as an Assistant Research Fellow (ARF) in the Cancer Society Social and Behavioural Research Unit (SBRU). "I have a passion for Māori health and health promotion. I feel Māori have the knowledge and capabilities to improve health statistics and outcomes within society and I have the responsibility to utilize my skills to help create solutions and interventions from grass roots levels through to policy levels". Congratulations Shawnee and we are excited to tautoko you on your Masters journey.
