Getting your computer ready for online exams

Before the exam

  • Restart your computer to clear the memory and help it run better – in the afternoon for a morning exam, or in the morning for an afternoon/evening exam
  • Do not make any major changes to software on your computer just before the exam (unless really needed)
  • If you do not know your Wi-Fi’s password, get it. Have it written down somewhere handy
  • If possible, connect your computer to your internet router with a network cable (available from shops that sell computers/electronic equipment). Or find the best combination of a suitable place to do your exam and Wi-Fi strength, especially if you are online for the whole exam
  • Ask others in your household not to use the internet (if possible) while you are doing your exam
  • Ensure your laptop is plugged into electrical power (i.e. don’t rely on a battery to last) and that the power is turned on
  • Have only the application/s running that is/are needed for the exam
  • Read all the information you have been sent about the exam (Blackboard and email) – especially who to contact if you have any IT/technical problems
  • Do the practice exam if one has been provided

During the exam – Blackboard/Turnitin

  • The recommended browser for Blackboard is Chrome. Only have one tab open – to the Blackboard exam. If an additional formula sheet or other supporting document is provided, download it, and open it separately
  • If you are doing an online Blackboard exam and you lose connection to the exam then it will not let you back in. Follow the examination instructions about who to contact for IT/technical help. If you are not sure, call AskOtago on 0800 80 80 98 or +64 3 479 7000
  • Do not refresh the page, close the browser window, or use the browser’s back button while sitting your exam
  • If you need to download a file from Blackboard for your exam and have problems, check the exam instructions. If you are still not sure what to do, contact AskOtago on 0800 80 80 98 or +64 3 479 7000
  • If you are writing your exam answer(s) in a file downloaded from Blackboard or a file you create:
    • As soon as you have downloaded/created the file, use Save As to save the document in Word format (.docx) with the [Paper code] Exam and your name (e.g. UNIO101 Exam Jane Doe.docx)
    • Save your document often as you work
    • We suggest setting an alarm so you know when the exam time is almost up, and you should be uploading your answer/s
  • If you need to upload an answer file into Blackboard/Turnitin:
    • Check carefully that you are uploading the correct file before you submit it
    • After your submission is completed, a digital receipt should be displayed in your browser window. A copy is also sent to your student email address. If the digital receipt does not show on screen after submitting your exam, return to the class portfolio page then look at the assignment to ensure your submission completed correctly. Submissions can be checked and viewed by clicking on the title of the paper which is under the title column to the right of the assignment name
    • If you do submit the wrong file and realise that before the submission deadline has passed, you can try resubmitting it and overriding the incorrect submission. If you cannot resubmit it or do not realise until after the submission deadline has passed, check the exam instructions to find out what to do. If you are still not sure, contact AskOtago on 0800 80 80 98 or +64 3 479 7000
    • If you have any other problems, check the exam instructions to find out what to do. If you are still not sure, contact AskOtago on 0800 80 80 98 or +64 3 479 7000.
