On Friday, 7 February, the University of Otago Vessel Polaris II set sail for the Auckland Islands. The crew onboard consists of staff and students from the University of Otago, including Emily Tidey from the School of Surveying. After transiting for three days, researchers will arrive at the Auckland Islands (~50°42’S, 166°07’E WGS84) undertake hydrographic surveying and geological investigations along the eastern coast of the Auckland Islands.
Then, on Sunday, 16 February the Polaris II will meet with the HMNZS Wellington and the Young Blake team onboard. With the help of the 12 enthusiastic student voyagers, research operations will continue around Smith Harbour, Norman, Hanfield and Deep Inlets.
