Thanks to a generous donation from Alexander Waugh, Business Development Manager for Fugro, the School of Surveying now have our very own Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).
The BlueROV2 is a modular ‘build your own’ type system with open source running software. Our new system has a camera, temperature and pressure sensors. To this we plan to add underwater positioning capabilities that will enhance our hydrographic surveying papers as well as research in Surveying, Marine Science and Physics.

SURV453 fourth-year students presented their Dunedin Housing Project, for housing the hundreds of workers expected in Dunedin soon to build the city’s new hospital. They did so in front of city councillors and members of the mayoral task force on housing, in part because Dr Filep said discussion on the issue needed to be in public. The students were given a hypothetical site on Market Reserve and the northern tip of the Oval to design their housing development.

The accuracy of the global positioning system (GPS) in smartphones has been significantly improved thanks to research conducted at the University of Otago, New Zealand, in collaboration with Curtin University, Australia.

A call is being made to recognise Otago’s science heroes with nominations now open for the biennial Otago Daily Times Otago Science Awards – a joint initiative between the New Zealand International Science Festival and the ODT. Nominations can be made online via the New Zealand International Science Festival scifest.org.nz website and will close on Thursday 28 June at 5pm. Winners will be announced at the launch of the New Zealand International Science Festival on Friday 6 July.

The National School of Surveying and the Coastal Otago Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (NZIS) celebrated by inviting members of the public to come along to meet us, see some of our data and have a go at using some of our gear in the Octagon, Dunedin this week.
Global Surveyors’ Day recognises the work of surveying and geospatial professionals. This is a worldwide event initiated by the Council of European Geodetic Surveyors (CLGE), the National Society of Professional Surveyors in the USA and the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) based in Denmark. The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (NZIS) and its members are supporting the day’s celebrations throughout New Zealand.

It allowed students to have a small taste of a variety of research activities, both in the School and on the Otago harbour, during an afternoon programme - especially utilising hydrographic surveying equipment.
