Dr Yong Chien Zheng was interviewed on 10 of November 2022 by Malaysia's largest English-language tabloid newspaper, The Star, concerning a research study that revealed groundwater extraction-induced land subsidence in Kelantan, Malaysia. This study collaborated with two other researchers from the School of Surveying, University of Otago, Dr Paul Denys and Dr Christopher Pearson.

The study found evidence that parts of the Kelantan state are sinking up to 4.2 mm/yr based on 17 years of GPS data (1999.0–2015.9) collected from 11 different locations. It was also found that the region shows higher ground deformation rates (0.22 ppm/yr) than the other parts of Peninsular Malaysia (generally <0.02 ppm/yr). Although the published results have not reached a consensus with the local authority, a potential collaboration will help establish further investigations.
