Happy Global Surveyors' Day 21 March!

Where would we be without surveyors?

Today is Global Surveyors' Day, a celebration of Surveying started by the Council of European Geodetic Surveyors (CLGE) and the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) and endorsed by the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG).

The organisers established this Day “as a way to globally recognize the ground-breakers, pioneers, individuals and the industry that has shaped our history and continues to be the foundation of our communities.”

This year Te Kura Kairūri | the School of Surveying will celebrate 60 years of surveying education at Te Whare Wananga o Otago | the University of Otago, giving us a good reason to reflect on our history.

Surveying instruction has been offered at Aotearoa New Zealand's oldest university from one year after its opening in July 1871.

Lectures in mining surveying began in 1872 and the School of Mines was established in 1878. The National School of Surveying separated from the School of Mines in 1963 and the latter no longer operates.

Today, Te Kura Kairūri | the School of Surveying plays a key role in the sustainable development of built and natural environments. We produce highly-regarded graduates who develop professional careers in land, engineering and hydrographic surveying, land planning, urban development and geospatial sectors.
