In early July, 9 students from the School of Surveying at Otago were sponsored to attend the New Zealand Region (NZR) of the Australasian Hydrographic Society (AHS) annual World Hydrography Day Seminar. As well as the University of Otago students, the NZR AHS sponsored a student from the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) and a student from Lincoln University.

During the day students participated in a tour of CentrePort to learn about the shipping facilities in Wellington Harbour and the challenges that have been faced during and after recent earthquakes. Then they listened to a variety of presentations and had the chance to meet and talk with the majority of hydrographic surveying practitioners in New Zealand – from industry, military, education and government realms.

Six students gave short presentations covering their hydrographic research, class experiences and future aspirations, and five are currently preparing a write up of the day to be published in the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors' (NZIS) Surveying+Spacial magazine and elsewhere.

Student attendance was made possible thanks to generous sponsorship provided by the NZR and AHS.
