Profile
Born and raised in New Jersey in the US. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Cook College, Rutgers University in 1981. Jim then started his surveying career in West Virginia in 1985 and became a Professional Land Surveyor in Virginia in 1992. He has performed a variety of survey work including boundary surveying, engineering and construction setout, photo control and GNSS surveys, and highway route design and location surveys. He then emigrated to New Zealand in 1995 and achieved a BSurv with Distinction in 1997 before working in private practice in Christchurch for four years. Jim became a New Zealand Licensed Cadastral Surveyor and a Registered Professional Surveyor in 2001. He came to the School of Surveying to teach in 2001.

- Public forum on ‘Sea Level Rise and its Implication upon Dunedin’, Sept. 2011, on behalf of the Coastal Otago Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (NZIS)
- Resurveying the Height of Aoraki Mt. Cook 2013 - 2014 - oversaw the trigonometric heighting of Aoraki - Mt. Cook from an historical background
