An introduction to New Zealand cadastral surveying procedures and practice, calculations, cadastral data preparation and basic boundary definition.
This paper is a core paper for the BSurv, and it establishes a strong background for understanding the NZ cadastral system. SURV 207 provides students with a sound understanding of the practice in basic office and field survey procedures required by NZ cadastral surveyors. The paper also introduces students to cadastral data requirements, data searching techniques and the concept of cadastres, land tenure and land registration systems. Past and present-day cadastral data presentation is studied. There is also an intermediate-level study of computational requirements required by all students, especially those specific to cadastral surveying. SURV 207 is the first of three sequenced cadastral papers and is required in order to progress to the next cadastral paper - SURV 307.

- Paper Structure
The paper consists of a variety of cadastral theory lectures and calculation lectures as they pertain to cadastral surveying, as well as practicals and tutorials that teach and reinforce cadastral surveying in the office as well as the field.
Access to Blackboard is required for information and contact purposes.

- To do your best, allow approximately 85 hours for private study, class preparation and taking tests and the final examination.
Total number of hours: 180
All practical/tutorial and drafting exercises must be completed to gain terms, bar a maximum of one, including obtaining a minimum pass mark of 50%. A penalty may then also apply for missing/failed work. If terms are not met, you will be unable to sit the final examination. In keeping with School of Surveying policy, there is also a requirement to gain a minimum of 40% on the final examination to pass this class.
A combination of Blackboard tests, written tests, assessed practicals and tutorials plus the final examination.

- All practicals and tutorials must be completed to a satisfactory standard in order to meet terms for this paper. A Landonline digital certificate is not required for this class.
Textbooks are not required for this paper.
However, a Course Reader must be purchased at the start of the semester from the School of Surveying office for approximately NZ$30. This reader contains the lectures, as well as most of the calculation tutorials and practicals.
The Land Information New Zealand 'Rules for Cadastral Survey 2010' plus several other documents will be made available to students via Blackboard.
