    Overview

An introduction to the design and layout of the engineering works needed in land development, including earthworks, culverts, roads, ancillary services and parking facilities.

SURV 204 is a core paper for the BSurv degree, and it introduces students to the basic concepts of geometric design of roads, engineering drawings, culvert materials and construction, and CAD drawings. The geometric design part of the paper looks at the requirements of horizontal and vertical alignment of roads and the associated calculations. The paper then moves into the design of parking lots, earthwork design and volume calculations of the associated earthworks and how culverts are used in roading and earthworks. The engineering drawing portion of the paper provides an understanding of the underlying principles associated with roading and earthworks and leads into the introduction to CAD drawings.

    Eligibility
Because this is a core paper, all BSurv students must complete this paper. However, it is suitable for graduates who are undertaking an engineering or design-based degree. It will be of benefit to anyone who is looking for a career in development or infrastructure design, with a particular interest in land development and construction.

    Paper Structure
The paper is structured into three main areas:
    • Roading - horizontal and vertical alignment, design form, location of roads, road capacity, intersections at grade, urban streets, on-street and off-street parking, parking layouts and ancillary road services
    • Earthworks - earthworks in construction; earthworks quantities; earthworks plants, including selection; costs and payment for use; trenching and pipelines; structural aspects of pipelines, culverts and batters
    • Engineering drawings - basic engineering drawing required for road construction and general earthworks. Students are introduced to a typical computer software package used to design urban roads and intersections and to provide set-out information
    Teaching Arrangements

This paper is taught as a full-semester paper. Students will be exposed to design and technical manuals, historical viewpoints, current thinking on design and construction matters and materials from a wide range of other sources.

    • Lectures will introduce the content themes and explain the important issues contained within the material
    • Tutorials will be used at key milestones to ensure that students have taken on board the important issues and are confident in undertaking the associated calculations
    • Practice sessions are included to ensure that the students receive the required help to complete the drawing assignments and any associated calculations
    • Field trips have been included so that students are able to see real-world, practical examples of the theoretical models introduced during lectures
    • Handouts - Extensive additional material is supplied along with the lecture material so that students have an understanding of where design limits and regulations come from and the reasons why some decision are made. This will reinforce the learning goals
    • Blackboard - All lecture notes will be made available on Blackboard. Blackboard will also be used as a main source of communication with the class

    Assessment:

    • 45% internal (4 assignments and 1 test)
    • 55% external (final exam)
    Textbooks

Textbooks are not required for this paper.
