    Overview

    A project representative of the kind of professional report work done in a government agency, surveying practice, consulting firm, etc.

    This paper provides an opportunity for students to further specialise their academic programme in an overtly practical and experiential way.

    The aim of the paper is to provide students with the opportunity to apply and integrate relevant and already-learned skills, knowledge, theories, tools and techniques within the context of a specific real problem-solving environment and project as may be experienced in the workplace.

    Lecturer/Supervisor: To be agreed. This will be dependent on the subject area of the professional project.

    Prospective students must contact (prior to choosing the paper) the School of Surveying lecturer whose discipline/specialisation is in the area of the proposed professional project to obtain agreement to be supervised by that lecturer and, hence, approval to undertake the SURV 470 Professional Project.

    Paper Structure
    The paper usually involves some set course readings, some practical work to gather field data and applying that data to a practical problem of relevance to the surveying profession. The final output and assessment will usually be a professionally prepared and presented report recording the project.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students who successfully complete the paper will:

    • Develop the skills of independent, professional report work (professional research as opposed to academic research), analysis, review, argument and self-expression surrounding the solution of a problem that is representative of the kind of professional report work undertaken in a government agency, surveying practice, consulting firm, etc
    • Develop the skills required to plan, manage, execute and report on a professional project in a professionally competent manner
