The School of Surveying offers a number of scholarships and prizes which are awarded in years 2, 3 and 4 of study towards the BSurv degree.

Carmichael Prize in Engineering Surveying

CarmichaelThis prize was donated by Carmichael UK in 2006 and valued at $1500. It is awarded to the student with the highest mark in SURV459 Engineering Surveying.

Consulting Surveyors of New Zealand Prize

Consulting Surveyors of New ZealandThis prize was established in 1998 by the Consulting Surveyors of New Zealand and is awarded annually to the student who attains the highest standard of achievement in the paper SURV 450 Professional Practice. The prize is valued at $200.

Critchlow Associates Prize in Surveying

Critchlow AssociatesThis $500 prize was established in 1998 and is awarded annually to the student who attains the highest standard of achievement in the SURV 319 Spatial Analysis and Programming paper.

Dean's Land Administration Prize

Two, $200 prizes awarded annually to recognise excellence in scholarship and writing in the subjects of Land Tenure and Statutory Planning. Two awards are given, to the student who attains the highest overall standard of writing in both the SURV205 and SURV206 papers and to the student who attains the highest overall standard of writing across SURV455 and SURV456.

Fulton Hogan Prize

Fulton HoganThe Fulton Hogan Prize was established in 2009 by Fulton Hogan Ltd, Dunedin to support and foster studies in civil engineering. The prize, valued at $500, will be awarded annually to the student who gains the highest aggregate mark in SURV203 Land Development Engineering 1 and SURV204 Land Development Engineering 2.

Harrison Grierson Prize

Harrison Grierson NewThis prize, valued at $750 was established in 2001 by Harrison Grierson Consultants Ltd. It is awarded annually to the student who is studying full-time towards the BSurv or BSurv (Hons) degree and who gains the highest aggregate mark in either PMAN 401 - Project Management, SURV460 Construction Management and SURV453 Urban Design 2, or SURV 450 Professional Practice, SURV451 Surveying Methods 3 and SURV 457 Cadastral Surveying 3.

Harrison Grierson Scholarship

Harrison Grierson NewThis scholarship, valued at $1,750 was established in 2001 by Harrison Grierson Consultants Ltd. It is awarded annually to the student who is studying full-time towards the BSurv or BSurv (Hons) degree and who gains the highest aggregate mark in either SURV 324 - Land Development Engineering 3, or in SURV 301 - Surveying Methods 2 and SURV 302 - Geodetic Reference Systems and Network Analysis. The total number of points for either suite of papers is 36pts.

Holmes Miller Prize

$250 is awarded annually to commemorate the exploits of Sir Holmes Miller OBE, BA, DSc, FNZIS FRICS, a New Zealand surveyor and Antarctic explorer (he accompanied Sir Edmund Hilary to the South Pole). This prize is given to the student presenting the best SURV590 dissertation in the year.

Institute of Cadastral Surveying Prize

ICS LogoThe Prize, consisting of $300, a free five year membership to the Institute of Cadastral Surveying (ICS), a complimentary copy of the "Cadastral Index" and a three year license for the use of the Cadastral Index, was established in 2006 and is awarded for the best SURV457 Cadastral Surveying 3. project. Keystone NZ Trust - Student Study Award

Keystone NZ TrustThe Keystone NZ Trust - Student Study Award is available to students undertaking a BSurv degree, whose family/personal situation is such that they will suffer financial hardship whilst undertaking the course of study, may apply for assistance (in the form of a Student Study Award) from the Keystone NZ Property Education Trust. Application forms and further details can be obtained by contacting:

Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) - OUSS Research Grant

LINZ Logo$1500, is awarded by Land Information New Zealand in March of each year, to the student/s whose Honours Dissertation (SURV590) is considered of interest to LINZ.

Paterson Pitts Partners Ltd Award for Advanced Urban Design

Paterson Pitts Partners$1500 is awarded annually to the student whose SURV453 Urban Design project is considered the best.

Surveyor General's Prize

LINZ LogoThe Surveyor General's Prize is awarded to the student whose SURV399 2nd year field course Report is considered the best, by the Surveyor General of Land Information New Zealand. There is also a highly commended award presented each year. The prizes are now administered by LINZ.

Turnbull Thomson Scholarship in Surveying

Awarded in memory of John Turnbull Thomson, the first Surveyor General of New Zealand. The two top intermediate students, entering the second year of the BSurv degree with the most meritorious academic qualifications will receive a scholarship of $1000 each.

There are also Turnbull Thompson Prizes of $250 offered each year, for the BSurv student gaining the highest overall academic result at 200, 300, and 400 level.

University of Otago - senior scholarship or senior award

The University of Otago offers at least one senior scholarship or senior award to candidates proceeding to a course of full-time study leading to the final year of the BSurv degree. A senior scholarship is valued at $1500 and is generally only awarded to a student with an A to A+ average. A senior award is valued at $750 and is generally awarded to a student with an A- to A average. Only one such scholarship or award is made each year.
