My genealogical links are to the Far North and these links firmly ground me as a Māori academic. I am a Professor in Māori physical education and health and joined the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences as an academic staff member in 2011. After obtaining a Bachelor of Physical Education Honours degree majoring in Exercise Sport Science and a Master of Physical Education focusing on education policy, I completed a doctorate in Māori studies and physical education examining rangatiratanga and Māori health and well-being within a customary fisheries context.

In 2013, alongside Dr Hauiti Hakopa, we established Te Koronga which is a graduate research excellence group. Following from the success of our graduate research excellence group we became a recognised University of Otago Research Theme:

I also provide leadership to the Coastal People: Southern Skies collaboration that connects communities with world-leading, cross-discipline research to rebuild coastal ecosystems.

Research

My research platform is Te Koronga. Te Koronga is focused on Māori research excellence that uplifts the hopes and aspirations of Māori communities in the context of Māori physical education and health. Māori physical education and health is the application of worldview for mauri ora, flourishing wellness.

Māori physical education and health

We examine notions of mauri ora, hauora and oranga for Māori and indigenous peoples. In particular, we work alongside numerous local and national Māori organisations in the praxis of Māori physical education and health including: Parore-Edmonds Whānau,Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua, Kāti Huirapa ki Puketeraki, NZ Police, Toi Tangata.

Tangaroa | Marine

Tangaroa is the Māori deity of the sea. We research the concept of tangata moana (people of the ocean) and how this concept is critical for health and well-being of coastal communities. I co-lead Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai with Associate Professor Chris Hepburn of the Department of Marine Science. Projects include:

Waka and water safety

We are members of Tangaroa Ara Rau which is a nation-wide collective of Māori water safety experts interested in strengthening connections to the water for wellness.

Indigenous science

We lead a University of Otago Research Theme:

Te Koronga: Indigenous Science.

The research focus is indigenous science, including:

Science derived from Māori ways of knowing as an example of indigenous science
Interface research: the combination of Māori and Western science
Science that embodies a decolonising research ethic

Projects include:

These four programmes are underpinned by my praxis and these are the threads that are a feature of all of the my research:
