My research focuses on how the value of swimming can strengthen whānau connection to the water environment as a way to improve Māori health and well-being. Using whānau knowledge and experiences, I explore our whānau past time interaction as well as exploring how whānau were taught to swim and engage with water. Through this research I am hoping to unravel a Māori specific way of encouraging whānau to learn to swim and enjoy surrounding water ways.

Alongside my research, we also run Te Koronga Korikori Tinana, which is a Māori physical activity initiative to encourage being active in a way that is influenced by a Māori worldview. This is done through the use of Te Reo Māori, Taonga takaaro and many different kēmū run at the University.

Terina is also a member of the Coastal People: Southern Skies collaboration that connects communities with world-leading, cross-discipline research to rebuild coastal ecosystems.
