MAOR308 Ngā Hākinakina a Te Māori

Various forms of technologies in Māori Performing Arts including poi and patu, etc. are examined. A practicum component is also included. Taught mainly in Māori.

In this paper students will develop composition and tutoring skills. Students will work in groups to research, compose and choreograph a haka, poi or waiata and then teach this item to the rest of the class. Students will also perform these items to a select audience.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this paper will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to compose original haka/waiata and choreograph original and pre-written haka and/or waiata
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach others
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to perform a range of compositions using appropriate actions, facial expressions, body movements and voice control
  • Demonstrate an ability to work together as a group to perform to a high-standard bracket of items
