According to the Anthropocene Working Group of the International Commission on Stratigraphy, we have moved from the Holocene to the Anthropocene.

How does this conception, which emphasises the significant impact of humanity on Earth’s geology and ecosystems, shape our understanding of ourselves? And how does it shape our understanding of God?

One of the core Christian convictions is that God cares for humanity and for the whole of God’s creation. To what extent can we trust in God’s providence? And specifically in God’s just governance in history, while also affirming this geological insight of humanity as the primary agent of current earth-history?

This paper emerges from a 12-year-long international collaborative project entitled “An Earthed Faith”, exploring what Christian eco-theology might offer to the multi-disciplinary conversation regarding how we come to terms with living in the Anthropocene.
