Background
For 18 years (1996–2014) Willem worked in South Africa, where he was committed to addressing social problems in developing countries through international research collaborations and capacity-building grants. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Centre for Sustainable Tourism and was the Director for the first four years until 2014.
During his time in South Africa, Willem was an Associate Professor at TUT, and the acting Head of Department at VUT, and a conference and resort manager for a regional service council. While in South Africa, Willem developed and taught several sustainable tourism development papers (subjects) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and worked with regional and local governments to help formulate tourism strategies.
In 2015 Willem immigrated to New Zealand, and for the first five years, he has been the Director of the Master of Tourism degree at Otago. His research focuses on (i) resilience of the hotel industry in water-stressed destinations and the SDGs, (ii) visitor and resident experiences at events and (iii) LGBTQIA+ tourism and events. As an expert in tourism and event management, he has supervised 18 Doctoral students and 14 research masters students, and examined several dissertations.
Willem served on conference organising committees, organiser of PhD workshops, Editor and Editor in Chief for Tourism Journals, Editorial Boards and reviewer for several journals. Currently, he is the co-host of the 2023 World Leisure Conference. His academic publications received over 20,000 reads, an h‑index of 15, and almost 1,000 citations on Google Scholar.

He explored social issues at mega-events (e.g. 2010 FIFA World Cup), attendee experiences at hallmark events (e.g. music festivals) and sustainable tourism in small towns, and his research influenced three tiers of government (e.g. visitor surveys for the National Zoological Gardens; supply and demand reports to a Provincial Tourism Authority; and an accommodation survey to inform the Local Government of Pretoria). Recently funded projects included the following:
