English for Otago (EFO)

English for Otago offers a pathway to degree programmes at the University of Otago

The English Language Centre now offers the English for Otago programme online. Dates, entrance requirements and tuition fees will be the same as those for the programme run for students in New Zealand. It allows students who are unable to travel, or who are looking for a cost-effective option to study in their home country before travelling to start their future degree at the University of Otago. All classes will be delivered live online, so students will need to have a reliable, fast Internet connection and a good computer with a webcam and microphone. A headset, second monitor and a printer would also be useful.

English requirements for the University of Otago

There are no 'special examinations' for students who fail English for Otago.

Students must achieve a minimum of a 'C' grade to pass the English for Otago course.

In achieving this grade, students meet the English language requirements for admission to most undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at the University of Otago.

Admission to the English for Otago programme

This is an intensive course requiring a high entry standard. You are required to pass the entrance exam in order to enter EFO or have achieved the required English proficiency level before the course start date.

Entrance exam information

The entrance exam is held prior to each English for Otago intake.
Important dates for English for Otago

  • No prerequisite English test result is required to take part in the exam.
  • Students can apply to participate in one or more exams during the year.
  • The exam is free but only open to students with an offer of place at Otago. Special consideration may be given to students who have submitted an application to Otago but who have not yet been issued a conditional offer.
  • The exam is held online via Zoom and is under staff supervision.

Required results for the English for Otago entrance exam

Results will be issued within one week, and the required results are as follows:

  • English for Otago Undergraduate: 55/100
  • English for Otago Postgraduate: 60/100

If students do not pass the exam, they still need to meet English entry requirements by submitting other English test results before EFO starts.

Students taking the exam in February or October will be contacted directly after they have been issued an offer of place for the EFO programme.

  • February, July and October 2023 intakes: 12 weeks
