Ian joined the Royal Air Force in 1997 and trained as a General Practitioner. He served as a Medical Officer and Senior Medical Officer at a variety of fast jet and helicopter bases in the UK; he has deployed operationally. In 2006, he was selected for the RAF Diploma in Aviation Medicine Course. Subsequently, he commanded the UK Aeromedical Evacuation Control Centre. For four years, during the busiest ever operational period, he was solely responsible for the global movement of all UK military patients.
