Research expertise and interest

Ian joined the Royal Air Force in 1997 and trained as a General Practitioner. He served as a Medical Officer and Senior Medical Officer at a variety of fast jet and helicopter bases in the UK; he has deployed operationally. In 2006, he was selected for the RAF Diploma in Aviation Medicine Course. Subsequently, he commanded the UK Aeromedical Evacuation Control Centre. For four years, during the busiest ever operational period, he was solely responsible for the global movement of all UK military patients. Amongst many accolades, his department won the UK's Ambulance Service Institute, Control Centre of the Year Award. Ian was later assigned as Coalition Validating Flight Surgeon to US military forces in 2010, controlling the aeromedical evacuation of US forces from the CENTCOM AOR. In January 2011, he commenced Occupational Medicine training at the Regional Occupational Medicine Department at RAF Brize Norton.

Ian retains a key active interest in Aviation Medicine, particularly Aeromedical Evacuation. He is a member of the NATO Research Task Group investigating safe ride standards for patient evacuation using unmanned aerial vehicles. He is a UK aeromedical examiner.
