Research expertise and interest

David is a graduate from the University of Tasmania and has completed postgraduate study at Otago gaining a PGDipAvMed and a Masters in Occupational Health (OccMed). He has also completed a Masters of Health Law through the University of Sydney and is embarking on a PhD in the area of Administrative Review of Aeromedical Decision Making. He is also a specialist occupational physician as a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (RACP).

He works at the Civil Aviation Authority in Australia as Senior Medical Officer where he is responsible for a large proportion of aeromedical certification and is a MROCC Medical Review Officer.

David continues his clinical work as an occupational physician at a zinc smelter in Hobart, as a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner at Hobart Airport and he also does some medicolegal and fitness-for-duty consultative work. He is a panel member of the Medical Board of Australia and was previously a medical member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal.

David is a commercial pilot with aerobatics and tailwheel endorsements and holds a Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating and has spent time on scenic charter, freight and passenger operations in single- and twin-engine aircraft. He is the owner of an Aero Commander 500s which he uses primarily to conduct safaris around Australia with David Powell.
