Postgraduate studies in Travel Medicine, University of Otago

The demand for travel medicine consultations is about to grow as borders start to ease, progress on COVID vaccines continues and travel bubbles with other countries are developed.

Despite current border restrictions there are still those who continue to travel for business, volunteer work and family reasons. The pre-travel consultation has become more complex as we help patients navigate new threats to all countries, including those previously considered low risk.

Our travel medicine papers are distance taught, inter-professional and have been updated to include COVID related material and information. Care and management of the ill returning traveller is also included.

We offer a Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Travel Medicine. The Postgraduate Certificate enables students to master the key principles of risk assessment and preparation of the intending traveller, travel vaccines and vaccinology, prevention of food and water borne illness and other possible risks for intending travellers. The Postgraduate Diploma builds on this knowledge and explores tropical infectious diseases in depth. Depending on elective paper selection, either wilderness and expedition medicine or refugee and migrant health is further explored.
