Would you like to learn how to best manage your knee pain?

Who can take part?

You can take part in KneeCAPS if either:

  • You have been told that you have knee osteoarthritis by a health professional.
  • You are 45 years or older, have knee pain and meet some additional criteria that will be checked by a pharmacist.

Unfortunately, you cannot take part if you have had a knee replacement or have had a knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) or injection in the last 12 months or have one booked to happen. You also need to be able to read and write in English.

KneeCAPS is currently seeking Māori participants to ensure that study findings improve Māori health.

What will you need to do?

Firstly, you need to visit a participating pharmacy so that they can check that you have the right type of knee pain and answer any questions that you have about the study.

If you take part in KneeCAPS, you will be asked to:

  • Complete a series of questions in the pharmacy and a brief telephone survey the following week. These questions are about you, your knee, and your thoughts about arthritis.
You will receive a $30 voucher for completing the booklet and telephone questions.
  • Give your completed survey to the pharmacist, who will (at random) give you one of two different types of information and support.
When the study is finished, you will be given the other type of information to read as well, but no other care will be provided.
  • Complete follow-up surveys in 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months.
You will receive a $20 voucher for doing each survey.

Taking part in KneeCAPS will not cost you anything.
