EleMent: Electronic data for Mental health research

Raraunga Hauora Hinengaro

EleMent are a multidisciplinary research group bringing together expertise in epidemiology, public health and data science with clinical and lived experience of mental distress. We use routinely collected electronic data from health records and other sources to understand the distribution and determinants of mental health and mental distress in New Zealand. Our focus is on making the best use of available information to improve the mental health of New Zealanders. Our projects also use other data sources when existing electronic health care routine data is not able to answer our research questions, including using qualitative methods to draw on the lived experience of mental distress.

We have considerable experience in using linked electronic data for health research, including using the Statistics New Zealand Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI). We also have particular expertise in using the Programme for the Integration of Mental Health Data (PRIMHD) collection and community pharmacy data to examine the provision of health services and the relationship between mental distress and health and social outcomes.

EleMent is led by Dr Ruth Cunningham. For more information please contact Ruth at ruth.cunningham@otago.ac.nz.

We are based in the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago Wellington.
