Porirua city smokefree signThis website provides a range of New Zealand and international material related to smokefree outdoor policies, up to 2020.

Smokefree outdoor policies help to make smoking less normal. The more that children are around those who smoke, the more likely they are to take up smoking themselves. Smokefree outdoor public places can help reduce the uptake of smoking, particularly by children and young people. The normalisation of smoking at a neighbourhood or community level is related to the likelihood of starting smoking – or finding it hard to quit smoking. Some evidence suggests that smokefree outdoor policies increase quit attempts and quitting at a population level.

More generally, such policies are needed for wider health and environmental reasons. These include the secondhand smoke effects and because of tobacco-related litter.
