Would you like to hear about current topics in hauora Māori? Are you considering how to strengthen the focus on hauora Māori in your work or study? Or how to incorporate equity and Te Tiriti in your everyday practice?

This workshop is for those who have experience working in health and would like to hear about some of the latest thinking and research in hauora Māori. Through a combination of presentations, activities and facilitated discussion, this one-day course will explore pertinent topics in hauora Māori such as; Equity, rights, reo and tikanga, cultural safety and operationalising Te Tiriti o Waitangi in health. Hear practical examples from those who are working towards tino rangatiratanga in our Public Health landscape, and consider what might be done in your own practice.

Style of course

Small group – teaching and discussions in a group of up to 30 people. Guest speaker presentations. This course will be held in person in Wellington.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for those who have some background knowledge of the hauora Māori context, or experience in working in health, and will be of interest to those working in iwi development, health services, NGOs, health policy analysis and whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori communities and provider organisations, and also those who are currently studying in this area.

By the end of this course participants will be empowered to:

  • Discuss current topics in hauora Māori such as equity and rights, cultural safety, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, reo and tikanga
  • Reflect on their own practice and workplace and consider ways to strengthen the focus on hauora Māori, and implement Tiriti-based practice in day-to-day activities and decision-making

COVID-19 contingency plan

If COVID Alert Level restrictions prevent in-person/face-to-face delivery of this course, it will be delivered online the same day, and a credit of $100 given ($50 for those paying staff/student rate).

Teaching staff

Shirley Simmonds (convenor), (Raukawa, Ngāpuhi)

Shirley is a Kaupapa Māori health researcher, an adult educator and a mother of two young sons. She has worked in the areas of Māori health statistics, workforce development, Māori health ethics, and has contributed to the development of Kaupapa Māori Epidemiology. In recent years, her work has included the development of frameworks and teaching materials to encourage a focus on equity, cultural safety, and Tiriti-based practice. Shirley is interested in contributing to a health system and research environment that meets the needs of whānau Māori.
