Associate Professor Shieak YC Tzeng

Background

I graduated with a conjoint degree in medicine and PhD (physiology) from the University of Otago. I completed a period of hospital clinical practice before pursuing advanced post-doctoral training in New Zealand and at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital at Harvard Medical School on a National Heart Foundation Research Fellowship. I was awarded an HRC Sir Charles Hercus Fellowship in 2010 and returned to New Zealand where I was also appointed as a Lecturer and subsequently Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at the University of Otago, Wellington. Between 2013 and 2018, I served as the founding Director of Otago University's Centre for Translational Research.

I'm a clinician-scientist with 15 years of experience running research and development programs at the interface between medicine and technology in both academia and industry. My specialty is neurovascular pathology and medical device technologies based on low-field nuclear magnetic resonance. The translational nature of my research programme involved developing intellectual property to the point of commercialisation, including licencing deals and the formation of two University spinout companies.

My current research projects are focused on developing novel sensors for the early detection and classification of stroke in mobile ambulances.
