Dr Kanem will describe the remarkable gains made in sexual and reproductive health in the past 50 years, and point to the remaining barriers that prevent people from making their own decisions and fulfilling their full potential. Dr Kanem will share her vision for the pursuit of rights and choices worldwide, present findings from the “State of the World Population 2019” and offer some examples of progress and challenges in a number of Pacific countries.
Dr Kanem has more than 30 years of leadership experience in medicine, public and reproductive health, social justice, and philanthropy. She started her academic career with the John Hopkins and Columbia University schools of medicine and public health. She was a Ford Foundation Officer from 1992-2005, where she pioneered work in women’s reproductive health and sexuality.
