About Professor Anna Ranta's research

Anna Ranta IPL imageAnna Ranta (MD, PhD, FRACP, FAHA, FWSO) is an academic stroke neurologist and the Head of Department of Medicine at University of Otago, Wellington. Her research focuses on improving stroke and neurology care for New Zealanders and globally. She is the primary investigator on a number of significant research programmes including clinical trials on telehealth, artificial intelligence, and service integration and epidemiological and mixed-methods studies involving the use of health registries, big data linkage, health economic assessments and co-design to address health inequities stroke and beyond.

Anna was born and raised in Germany, completed her neurology and fellowship training at the University of Virginia, USA, and has been working and living with her family in New Zealand for the past 15 years. She lived for eight years in Palmerston North where she led the implementation of the first Otago Medical School all-year regional teaching site in her role as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education – Regional. In 2014 Anna moved to Wellington to take up the role of Executive Clinical Director for the Medicine, Cancer, and Community Directorate at Capital & Coast DHB until 2018 when she transitioned to the head of department role at the University of Otago, Wellington.

Since coming to New Zealand, Anna has led numerous local, regional, and national stroke initiatives including the implementation of New Zealand’s first regional Telestroke network, the development of the National Stroke Registry, and currently co-directs the Ministry of Health National Stroke Clot Retrieval Service Improvement Programme. She is also the President of the Neurological Association of New Zealand, the Treasurer of the Stroke Society of Australasia, a World Stroke Organization Board and Global Policy Committee Member, and serves on the editorial boards of Stroke and Neurology.
