An important element of health and safety tertiary prevention is work to enable injured workers to return to work. Work rehabilitation is an established multidisciplinary activity that enables workers to be medically, socially, and vocationally enabled to maximise their health and performance. This may be to their pre-injury job, to alternative work, or onto an unemployment benefit. Work can be temporarily or permanently modified to enable a differently abled work to engage in meaningful employment. Assessment of fitness to work in a range of occupations is not well taught to physicians, and the pre-placement assessment of ill and injured workers, or disability assessment for the purpose of obtaining benefits is covered in detail.
