The Department of Zoology is a recognised leader in the the ecology of fish in streams, lakes, estuaries, and nearshore marine environments. Staff in the Department carry out research on native fish including tuna (eels), bullies, kōkopu, kōaro, inanga, and non-migratory galaxiids. Other research focuses on introduced fish such as trout and perch, as well as zebrafish as a model species.
