Fine binding & printing

Over the past few years, resident Dunedin binder Bryan Kershaw has submitted his entries to the national binding competition organized by the Auckland based Association of Book Crafts. There are two major categories: an open section which allows the binder free reign, and a set book. Candidates are asked to bind the set book in a way that reflects its format and content. Here Kershaw's designs range from the delicate paua inlays on Tuwhare's Piggy-back moon, to the more elaborate ‘printing press' which accompanies Dennis McEldowney's work about the Auckland University Press. These superb examples of hand-craft binding have been donated to Special Collections.

Tara McLeod utilizes his graphic design background to produce limited edition private press books under The Pear Tree Press imprint. Although productions are limited by costs and type styles available, the results - even with brown butcher paper - are creative masterpieces in layout and design. McLeod owns all the wood type alphabets displayed in this book and is, according to some, the best private press book maker in New Zealand. This is copy no.3 of 60, and is a recent addition to Special Collections.
