Cabinet 14: Ernie Webber - Collector

The Manager, The Standard Literature Co Ltd., Calcutta, to Ernie R. Webber, 16 April 1946.

The Manager, The Standard Literature Co Ltd., Calcutta, to Ernie R. Webber, 16 April 1946.

While living in Colombo (Sri Lanka) in 1946, Webber contacted the Standard Literature Co. Ltd., in Calcutta, who were distributors of Clarence Winchester’s Railway Wonders of the World (1935), a publication that detailed accounts of railways, railway stations and trains of the world. Published in over 50 magazine issues, the first part contained a colour fold-out of the GWR King Class Locomotive, while the second had a colour plate of America’s first diesel-electric Express. Not every collector is successful in the chase for items desired, and Webber, as in this instance, was no exception. Fortunately, the Manager offered him an alternative of a second-hand set of ‘Locomotives’, which he purchased for 35 rupees.
