After escaping from Hong Kong in 1941, Ernie Webber finally settled in India for two years (1946-47), where he invested in Woolworths, among other financial ventures. Back in Auckland in 1965, he planned another extensive rail trip which would take in ‘Sydney-Perth (about 6 systems and gauges) then to Singapore/Bangkok by rail – air to Calcutta, rail to Karachi, air to Basra and rail the rest.’ His Rules for Train Examiners was printed in New Delhi in 1939 and given the number of updated amendments tipped in, its currency no doubt continued for many years after. Appendices O and P depict forms for returning and damaged carriages and wagons.
