Straight Jackets: the Art of the Book Jacket University of Otago Straight Jackets: the art of the book jacket

The first American edition jacket of Cummings's work (1944) combines a vertically placed 'one times one' with a numerical '1 x 1' on the front cover. Typically, Cummings's name is all lower case. Here the unknown British designer at Horizon has removed the numerical statement, relegating it to the title-page. He has also changed the jacket colour to a dull cream, and put the poet's name in capitals (Kabel, designed by Rudolf Koch).
