German born Hans Tisdall (original name Hans Aufseeser) moved to London in 1931, specializing in textile designs and murals. Skilled in brush lettering, he designed a number of book jackets for Jonathan Cape. Here he applies his skill to Lampedusa's work about his native Sicily published by Collins and Harvill Press. Typically, Tisdall's jackets feature strong calligraphic lettering and sharply drawn colour separations.
