David Gascoyne (1916-2001) was one of the earliest champions of Surrealism, having friendships with Dali, Max Ernst, Andre Breton, Paul Eluard and Pierre Jean Jouve. The publication of this work - with its Graham Sutherland images - helped establish his international reputation. Sutherland (1903 -1980) was primarily a painter of imaginative landscapes, portraits and still lifes. His use of fire and dark brooding lines on the jacket match the desolate tone of Gascoyne's war-time verse.
