If This is a Man is one part of Primo Levi's record of enslavement in Auschwitz and his return to Italy after liberation by the Red Army (The Truce is the other). The jacket design by Bernard Blatch, a former graphic designer with ABC television, evokes a desolate camp feeling, made more striking with the use of white that creates a 'no-man's land' area on the cover. Blatch used a contemporary photograph to create the image.
