Vanessa Bell (1879-1961), sister of the novelist Virginia Woolf, brought a painter's concern for movement and texture to the design of book jackets. The use of a few colours, with lettering deliberately casual, make for an image instantly recognizable to all Woolf fans. She designed a number of such jackets for Leonard Woolf's Hogarth Press.
