In the early days of book jacket design, the publishers would often lift an image already found within the text of the book and place it on the cover. It was a cheap option that also boosted recognition and reinforcement. Thesiger's own photograph called 'The Sands' not only forms the frontispiece picture to his book but also a striking image for the cover.
