Whether it was from pre-war time restrictions or the lack of technologies to produce dazzling jacket covers, J. Wilkie & Co., in Dunedin opted for a plain and simple design to cover McNab's history of New Zealand from Tasman's discovery in 1642 through to the Proclamation of British Sovereignty and the appointment of a Governor in 1840. The cost of the book (six shillings) is discreetly placed near the bottom left hand corner. The paper used is like thin newsprint.
