Straight Jackets: the Art of the Book Jacket University of Otago Straight Jackets: the art of the book jacket

Although John Mulgan's classic work Man Alone was published by Selwyn and Blount in Britain, the jacket is worth displaying as it is a known New Zealand rarity. On publication, few copies were sent out, few were sold and the stock held at the firm's Paternoster Row premises were lost in an air raid. The unknown designer has captured that portion of the book that describes Johnson's three months alone as he crosses desert (Desert Road) and mountain range (Kaimanawas) in the centre of the North Island. One other copy of this jacket is recorded. It is owned by a private collector in Wellington who recently lent it to the National Library of New Zealand.
