Robert Lord – 1987

Bert & Maisy

Life in New York had taken its toll, and by moving to Dunedin, Robert Lord (1945-1992) wanted to remove big-city pressures so that the play he wanted to write would come 'naturally' and be developed 'slowly and satisfyingly'. As Burns Fellow for 1987, Bert & Maisy was fine-tuned and eventually published in 1988 by Otago University Press. Lord also wrote and directed The Affair for the Globe Theatre, which offered him the opportunity to take one of his plays from conception through to performance without any compromises. The typescript is on display.
