Image of the nervous systemAnaesthesia is primarily a service speciality linked to the practice of surgery. The discipline of Anaesthesia provides unique opportunities for the daily practice, demonstration and teaching of applied physiology and pharmacology, and information processing as well as technical procedures.

The Anaesthesia Section has an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. This is complemented by postgraduate research.

Our mission statement is to strive to be at the forefront of knowledge and best practice in this discipline and to maintain an active research programme to complement this.

Anaesthesia refers to the practice of administering medications or gases that block the feeling of pain and other sensations. This allows medical and surgical procedures to be undertaken without causing undue discomfort to the patient.
