I earned my BCMS(Hons) and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waikato in 2012. Prior to joining the Department of Computer Science in 2020, I had worked at Google (Mountain View, USA), European Media Laboratory (Heidelberg, Germany) and Yunnan University (Kunming, China).

My primary research focus is centered on human-oriented AI, which sits at the intersection of natural language processing, information retrieval, computer vision, machine learning, deep learning and human-computer interaction. Within this domain, I am particularly interested in creating novel explainable AI models that could not only benefit humans in various ways but also provide comprehensible explanations for their decisions and predictions. This includes the ability to answers questions based on various medical images and documents to assist with medical diagnosis and treatment decisions; to simplify explanation of legal cases in language accessible to non-experts; or to facilitate cross-lingual Māori-English document search and translation.
