Department of Geology

Career opportunity recommendations for Geologists are often limited to mining or exploration.

This presentation will seek to provide students with a career option where they can maintain a sustainable work life balance while continuing to build their technical knowledge in geological principals within the Civil Engineering workspace.

Working in Geotech, Geologists will develop their understanding of interpreting ground conditions from an engineering perspective using ground investigation methods such as boreholes, test pits, hand augers, geological and geomorphological mapping. Projects you will be involved in (at Beca) will include immediate natural disaster response, key infrastructure design and construction (water and roading), industrial and residential design and construction, and early-stage project feasibility.

While working on these projects you will maintain a balanced workload of both fieldwork and office work. In the field, you will be providing oversight on ground investigations, input on construction, and quantifying geotechnical risks to a project. In the office, you will be developing your scientific and engineering reporting skills while providing input on the design of various civil engineering structures.
