The Big Problem with Charismatic Extinction Threats - Nicholas Agar
The uncanny abilities of ChatGPT triggered much speculation about artificial superintelligence. I offer a response to artificially superintelligent beings that concedes that they are possible and potentially imminent. An ASI violates no law of logic nor any law of physics that we know of. There is nevertheless a concern about the claim charismatic extinction threats like Skynet have on what Elke Weber refers to as our finite pool of worry. It’s possible to be overly worried about ASI just as it's possible for us as individuals to be overly worried about cancer. I conclude with a suggestion about how to achieve a more rational allocation of collective worry about human extinction.
