Professor Harlene Hayne – Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Professor Hayne completed her MSc and PhD at Rutgers University and spent three years at Princeton University as a Postdoctoral Fellow before coming to the University of Otago in 1992. She has held a personal chair in Psychology since 2002.
Professor Hayne's primary research interest is memory development in infants, children, adolescents, and adults. The findings from her research have been published in a wide variety of international, peer reviewed journals and are often cited in courtrooms, both in New Zealand and overseas. Professor Hayne is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and of the American Psychological Society. She has served on the Royal Society's Academy Council and the Marsden Fund Council. She is currently a member of the New Zealand National Science Panel, and is President-Elect of the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology.
As Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hayne oversees all of the research and commercialisation activities of the University.

Dr Katharina Ruckstuhl – Senior Research Analyst
Dr Ruckstuhl joined the University of Otago in 2008 after working for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu for five years as education manager and project consultant. She worked with communities, local and central government agencies to implement Māori-focused initiatives throughout the South Island education sector. Prior to that, she had been in the teaching profession. Dr Ruckstuhl completed her Honours degree and PhD through the English Department at Otago. As well, she has post-graduate qualifications in Education through Massey University.
Dr Ruckstuhl is the Secretary of the Research and Equipment Committees and provides cross-University research and data analysis to support strategic and policy planning.

Liz Owen – Assistant to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Liz’s role is to provide assistance to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise and to co-ordinate the financial and HR requirements of the Research Division. She also oversees the organisation of the annual research awards.
Liz came to the University of Otago from Wales in 2006, where her indigenous expertise in the Welsh language was utilized in a number of administrative and executive roles at Cardiff University and the University of Wales.

Dr Bret Morris - Director of Enterprise
Bret came to Research and Enterprise in 2005 after four years with Investment New Zealand (part of NZTE) as their Biotechnology Investment Manager. Prior to this he worked for HortResearch as a Business Development Manager for Extremophile research (2000 - 01) and Science Manager for Gene Transfer and Expression and Plant Development (1993 - 99). He was Research Director for MPB - Cologne (1999 - 2000), programme leader with DSIR Plant Protection (1985 - 93) and scientist Plant Diseases Division (1980 - 83). In 1983 - 85 he worked for Agrigenetics Corporation and the John Innes Institute.
Bret graduated with a PhD in Plant Virology from the University of East Anglia and MSc Hons and BSc from Massey University.
Bret is the Director for Enterprise reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Enterprise), Professor Harlene Hayne.

Dr Brian Young – Director of Research
Brian joined the Research and Enterprise Office in June 2009 after four years at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington, D.C. as the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology’s first Science & Technology Counsellor to the United States of America. In his earlier life as a neuroscience researcher, he was a senior scientist at HortResearch, a FRST Research Fellow at the University of Otago, and undertook a period of post doctoral work that was divided across the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received a BSc(Hons) in psychology from the University of Canterbury (NZ), and a PhD in behavioural neuroscience from Dartmouth College (USA).
Brian is the Director for Research, reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise), Professor Harlene Hayne.

Dr Ruth Appleby - Physical and Environmental Science
Ruth has a PhD in Genetics from Massey University. Her post-doctoral experience began at AgResearch (Grasslands), working on generating white clover with resistance to common pasture pest insects. Her research continued with both the Pathology and Biochemistry departments at the University of Otago with research into blood clotting abnormalities and inherited disease caused by mitochondria malfunction. Ruth subsequently spent several years at the biotechnology company, Biopool USA (Ventura, California). As Director of Product Development she was responsible for both improving existing blood clotting diagnostic products and the creation of new products for market.
Ruth joined Research and Enterprise in August 2008 and will be applying her research and commercial experience to develop funding opportunities and relationships with companies and organizations primarily with interests for the Physical and Environmental Sciences.

Stuart Barson - ICT, Public Health and Humanities
Stuart worked as a Ministry of Health policy analyst and Ministerial Private Secretary, and then taught English as a foreign language at the University and overseas. Stuart is a director and investor in a number of local creative industry businesses. He has an MA in Political Studies from the University of Otago.
Stuart works with business and government nationally and internationally to develop partnerships that support the University's research and enterprise activities.

Dr Fernanda da Silva Tatley - Biotechnology
Fernanda joined the office as a Research Advisor for Health Sciences in December 2007, subsequently commencing a role as Enterprise Manager in June 2008. Her background includes academic, biotechnology and commercial experience over more than 2 decades. Prior to her current position she was involved with Roche Diagnostics NZ, as manager of the Applied Science portfolio for the South Island and Wellington. The transition from academia to commerce was made by working as a senior scientist at Pacific Edge Biotechnology Ltd for 3 years, after she came to Otago University to work on a Post-Doctoral Marsden grant in 1999, in the Cancer Genetics Laboratory. Following completion her PhD at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and prior to arriving in Dunedin, she was involved for 5 years with the Glaxo-Welcome Action Tb Programme as a senior scientist. This equipped her with extensive experience in microbial and mammalian molecular and cell biology.
By interfacing her research, biotechnology and commercial experience, the love for science communication and business development, she is able to provide professional and strategic support to researchers in the preparation of their grant proposal applications. She is responsible for the Departments of Anatomy & Structural Biology and Physiology, as well as for the Schools of Dentistry and Physiotherapy in the Health Sciences Division.
Fernanda was awarded a BSc(Honrs)(Med Biochem), MSc (Zoology) and PhD (Med Microbiol) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a Master of Entrepreneurship from the University of Otago.

Dr Rachel Elliot - Life Sciences
Rachel started work in the enterprise area in 2006. Prior to this she worked as a consultant on a variety of research based assignments in healthcare sector for university and industry clients. Rachel worked for five years at Tatua Cooperative Dairy Company as a Senior Development Scientist involved in product development. After completing her PhD at Otago in microbiology, Rachel worked on projects in bacterial drug resistance at Queens University in Canada.
Rachel works with researchers to identify new research funding opportunities, and develops and manages relationships with collaborating institutions, government, and business. Her role has a particular focus on strategic projects including the development and promotion of research centres.

Dr Craig Grant - Fund Specialist
Since completing a PhD in plant biochemistry at Otago University Craig has worked at a number of organisations including the Foundation for Research, Science & Technology (manager of NERF, and Food and Fibre), the New Zealand Forest Industries Council (R&D Manager), MeatNZ (Research Manager), the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission (Strategic Projects), at the University of Surry (Head of Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships), and the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry (Manager Sustainable Farming Fund).
Craig works across all divisions providing help with strategic funding opportunities across a range of agencies including FRST, TEC, and MAF.

David Grimmett - Biotechnology
David has an MSc in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Otago and experience working in animal and human health research (AgResearch and University of Otago, Wellington), teaching secondary school science (Bayfield High School) and managing sales of scientific equipment (Biolab Limited).
David has worked in the enterprise area since January 2005 as an Enterprise Manager leading the biotechnology sector, spanning the Health Sciences and Sciences Divisions of the University.

Dr Eric Walton - Auckland Relations
Eric joined Research and Enterprise in December, 2007 after 26 years with HortResearch and Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries chiefly as research scientist, team leader and project and client manager. He led various programmes on optimising fruit and flower production, linking whole plant physiology and molecular biology, and built business relationships with key industry partners including kiwifruit- Zespri, Floriculture industry and biotech - Genesis R&D. Eric has a BHortSci from Lincoln College and a PhD from the University of California at Davis.
Eric's role is to build linkages between the University and the business community in Auckland, working primarily with the Biotech, Food, ICT, Energy, and Service sectors.

Dr James Conner - Senior Enterprise Manager - Government Sector, Wellington
James has a broad academic, public sector and commercial background in the health, education and defence areas. James came to the office in 2009 from his role as Vendor Relationship Manager within the Information Directorate, Ministry of Health. Prior to this he was Business Manager/Acting Director at the Centre for Military and Veterans' Health, University of Queensland. His academic background includes roles as Visiting Lecturer in Political Science, University of Canterbury where he was also a Research Associate at the National Centre for Research on Europe; Teaching Fellow in Defence Studies at Massey University; and Dean of Public Administration, Military Studies Institute, New Zealand Army.
James holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Canterbury and is also a journalist and registered psychologist. James' role, based in Wellington, is to promote and support Research and Enterprise through strategic planning and engagement with University stakeholders along with maintaining and building key relationships with the government sector.

Susan has extensive experience managing multiple international programmes and high-profile marketing events. Her background includes eleven years experience in various administrative and programme management roles for Booz Allen Hamilton, a leading global management consulting firm, in Sydney and New York. While living in New York, Susan studied at New York University, subsequently crediting papers across to graduate from the University of Otago with a BA and a BCom.

Dr Natalie Harfoot - Division of Health Sciences
Natalie joined Research and Enterprise in March 2009. Natalie's role is to provide advice to researchers on any matters related to research proposals and the management of research contracts within the Department of Biochemistry, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and the School of Pharmacy.
Prior to her doctoral studies at the Department of Physiology (Otago), Natalie obtained an MSc (Honours, First Class) and BSc (Technology) from Waikato University. She has a research background in molecular biology and analytical chemistry and has previously worked on research projects in partnership with AgResearch, HortResearch, New Zealand Biotechnologies Limited and The Tetley Group (UK).

Dr Eric Lord - Division of Health Sciences
Eric was appointed as a Research Advisor for Health Sciences in August 2008. His role is to support academic and research staff in the Department of Anatomy and Structural Biology, the Department of Physiology, the School of Dentistry, and the School of Physiotherapy, on all aspects of developing research proposals and managing research contracts.
Eric has a research background in the cellular and molecular sciences. From January 2004, Eric worked as a Research Fellow in the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery to develop tissue-engineering strategies for the repair of cartilage injuries to the knee joint. He had a joint appointment with the Department of Anatomy and Structural Biology during 2008 to test novel biomaterials with surgical applications. Prior to working at the University of Otago, Eric was a Scientist at AgResearch, initially studying sheep genetics, then as a member of the sheep gene mapping team at the Molecular Biology Unit. In 1999 he went on to explore gene expression in regenerating deer antlers, focusing on the formation of cartilage tissue. Eric completed a PhD study in molecular biology at the Australian National University in 1989 and graduated with a BAgrSc (Honours, First Class) from Lincoln University in 1983.

Dr Edwin Meijerink -Dunedin School of Medicine
Edwin supports researchers in the Dunedin School of Medicine to identify funding opportunities and develop research proposals. He is also responsible for the negotiation and management of research contracts.
Prior to joining Research and Enterprise in December 2009, Edwin was the Science Manager at the Dunedin-based research consortia Ovita Ltd and Orico Ltd for projects in the areas of animal health, reproduction, and genetics. He has an academic research background in genetics, and before moving to New Zealand in 2005, worked in commercial research and development for the Swiss-based company Cytos Biotechnology Ltd where he was involved in the development of therapeutic vaccines for the treatment of chronic diseases.

Diana Rothstein - School of Business and Faculty of Law
Diana holds a BA(Hons) in Modern Languages (French and German) from the University of Maine and a Master of International Management from the American Graduate School of International Management, starting her career as a merchant banker in Chicago and Frankfurt, Germany. After moving to New Zealand in 1988, Diana first worked as a consultant with the University Consulting Group and was involved in consultancies with a number of health, education, business, industry, local council and Government organisations.
Diana joined the Research and Enterprise Office in November, 2008, having spent ten years in Preventive and Social Medicine as an Assistant Research Fellow, five of those with the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Unit (the Dunedin Study).
Diana is responsible for supporting researchers in the Faculty of Law, the Division of Commerce and the School of Business, to identify and develop funding opportunities, and to assist with their research proposals, along with the overall management of research contracts.

Dr Elaine Webster - Division of Humanities
Elaine has a PhD in Clothing and Textile Sciences and Anthropology (Otago). She has five years experience working as an academic at Otago, first as teaching fellow in Clothing and Textile Sciences and more recently as a lecturer in Sociology. Her research and publications are in dress and identity, combining social theory and material culture analysis.
Elaine joined the Research and Enterprise Office in 2008 and works to provide high-quality, professional research proposal support to researchers in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Education.

AJ Woodhouse - Division of Sciences
Amanda-Jane (AJ) has an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Otago. She has worked in both the private and public sectors in a variety of roles. Most recently she has been working as a Scientific/Regulatory Affairs Consultant contracted to Medsafe specialising in the evaluation of New Medicine Applications for generic drugs. Prior to this she spent time working within local government where she was responsible for managing resource consent compliance for the major industrial and municipal discharges within the Otago region.
AJ joined Research and Enterprise in May 2009. AJ's role is to provide advice to researchers on any matters related to research proposals and the management of research contracts within the Division of Sciences.

Lindsay came to the university in 2005 after 26 years in the NZ meat export industry. After the successful result of the 2006 PBRF Quality Evaluation Lindsay remained to coordinate activities associated with the submission of research performance for the 2012 Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) Quality Evaluation exercise.
