Postgraduate studies in Travel Medicine, University of Otago

The demand for travel medicine consultations and services is rapidly returning to pre-COVID‑19 pandemic levels. Many practitioners' skills in this area will need updating.

Our travel medicine papers are distance taught, inter-professional and are continuously updated to ensure they reflect current health practitioner and traveller needs.

We offer two options for initial postgraduate study: the Postgraduate Certificate in Travel Medicine and the Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine. We also offer the Master of Travel Medicine for those interested in further research-focused study.

Postgraduate Certificate in Travel Medicine (PGCertTravMed)

The Postgraduate Certificate enables students to master the key principles of risk assessment and preparation of the intending traveller including vaccination for travel and vaccine immunology, prevention of food, beverage and insect borne illness and other possible risks. It is the minimum qualification required for those wishing to become Authorised Yellow Fever Vaccinators.

Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine (PGDipTravMed)

The Postgraduate Diploma builds on the same material covered by the Certificate and explores tropical infectious diseases in greater depth. A choice of elective papers, either Wilderness and Expedition Medicine or Refugee and Migrant Health allows the student to round off their studies.

Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine (PGDipTravMed)

Master of Travel Medicine (MTravMed)

The Master of Travel Medicine is a research qualification which offers the opportunity to build on the diploma through in-depth exploration of a field of interest.
