Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Robin Gauld has received a Higher Doctorate from Victoria University of Wellington in recognition of his contribution to healthcare governance.

Professor Gauld was awarded the qualification in Wellington last week.

A higher doctorate is awarded for a substantial body of published work which indicates excellence, distinguished leadership and provides an original and prestigious contribution to the relevant field.

At the graduation ceremony, Victoria's Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford said Professor Gauld’s research into areas such as comparative health policy, clinical governance, primary care, and health information technology has had tangible outcomes for New Zealanders and made a strong impact on the international academic community.

Despite having already gained a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (first class) and Master of Arts from Victoria, and a PhD from the University of Hong Kong, Thursday’s graduation ceremony was just as special as his first, he says.

“It was quite nerve-wracking actually. It wasn’t the normal walk across the stage. I had to stand on the stage while the information was read out.

"I’ve got Otago to thank for a wonderful work environment ... to complete this Doctorate of Commerce."

“It was a deeply proud moment.”

He credits the University of Otago for his recent success.

“I’ve got Otago to thank for a wonderful work environment that has provided the foundation for being able to do a whole series of research over the years that has had the impact required to complete this Doctorate of Commerce.”
