Support and inspiration for teachers, schools and pupils from new entry classes to Year 13.

Primary

outreach19

There are a range of activities and approaches that are used in the primary program:

  • As part of links with local school we deliver a 5 week module of year 8 chemistry to pupils in local intermediate schools.
  • We can present whole school Chemistry days based on topics such as 'solids liquids and gases' or 'slime'. These involve a show and tell approach to illustrate some cool chemistry followed by hands on activities for the pupils.
  • Similar activities can be carried out for single classes.
  • Activities can be tailored to meet schools requirements.
  • We can provide follow up materials and suggestions for teachers to use with classes.
  • The program is delivered by trained staff and a team of PhD and undergraduate chemistry students.

Support for teachers in delivering NCEA assessments

outreach20

We recognise that NCEA practical assessments can be a big drain on resources and that the time involved in the 3.1 extended investigation can cause major disruptions in schools.

Each year, from the end of June, we offer the free use of our teaching labs to High schools so that their students can carry out NCEA 3.1 (or other internal standards).

This use includes all chemicals and equipment required; student will only need to bring their samples for analysis.

Guidance can be given about suitable projects and technical support will be provided on the days.

Magic shows and demonstrations

outreach21

We can also visit your school and do a show and tell demonstration about an aspect of chemistry.

This can be tailored to your needs, for example states of matter or acids and bases etc.

We're happy to work with any age group in either large groups on a stage or smaller groups in classrooms.
